We’re back just in time for March Madness! Sorry for the interruption in F&F service; people much smarter than I were making essential technological changes behind the scenes. I’m playing catch-up with the round-ups so if some of this news seems old to you it’s because it is. But there’s plenty of new stuff in there too. As always, you can follow Fates on Twitter @B ...... Fates & Fortunes Round-Up: Feb. 15 – Feb. 22, 2010

With the moguls, the half-pipe and men’s figure skating all complete, my Olympics-watching has waned, although I have been trying to translate what I’ve been seeing to my skiing and so far not good at all. Denver’s NBC affiliate, KUSA (shameless local plug), did a piece on how to not feel bad about yourself for not being an Olympic athlete. I’m pretty sure they were di ...... Read More

In my house right now, it’s Olympics 24/7. Who cares if NBC is losing $250 million or if there’s no snow in Vancouver? I literally cannot get enough – I watched all four hours of the opening ceremonies, last night’s pairs figure skating and today I’ve got snowboard cross qualifying runs on with the sound down. I only wish the freestyle skiing competition went on ...... Read More

Events I’m looking forward to this week: Ellen finally joins American Idol, if only she had been there for the Pants on the Ground segment; more more more Lost; and a nostalgic return to Survivor with Heroes v. Villains. Go Boston Rob! Show Russell who’s boss! Yeah, I watch way too much TV, but as I love to say: it’s my job. As always, you can follow Fates on Twitter @BCFates ...... Read More

We're not out of the woods yet

Paige Albiniak

Two layoff announcements hit our industry today, reminding us that while it may feel like the economy is on the mend, people still are losing their jobs. To these unlucky folks, any economic recovery just got put a lot further off. News began trickling out over the weekend that CBS News had begun a new round of layoffs, which will affect less than 7% of the news division, including some staffers a ...... Read More

And now for something completely different: a little good economic news

Paige Albiniak
Posted by Paige Albiniak on January 29, 2010

In contrast to yesterday’s blog on the continued dearth of jobs in our economy, the Bureau of Economic Analysis today said that it expects Q4 2009 real gross domestic product (GDP) to grow by 5.7%, the biggest increase since Q3 2003. That improvement is largely due to private companies rebuilding their inventories, contributing nearly 3.4% to that GDP change, reports NPR’s Planet Mon ...... Read More
