Hearst TV Chief Barrett Shares His Strategy

Posted by Michael Malone on May 25, 2010

I had an illuminating sit-down with Hearst TV President/CEO David Barrett last week about the state of the industry, the challenges from Washington (regarding broadcast spectrum) and the networks (regarding retransmisson consent), and what it is that makes Hearst stations leaders in so many markets. A B&C Hall of Famer, Barrett enjoys one of the better views of New York from his perch just sou ...... Read More

KNBC Los Angeles VP of Content Steve Lange didn’t last long in that role–by the LA Times‘ count, just 110 days, in fact. Times reporter James Rainey offers a look at–and not a few opinions about–the perils of NBC Local Media adding splashy in-house lifestyle programming to its content mix. He writes: As KNBC’s “vice president, content,” Lange ...... Read More

Several NBC affiliate managers headed into their annual New York affiliate meeting this afternoon feeling very good about the upfront presentation the network had delivered earlier today. With 14 new shows, including several dramas that looked like they cost a bit of money, execs such as Dispatch Broadcast President/NBC affiliates board chairman Michael Fiorile and Post-Newsweek President/CEO Alan ...... I was pleased to hear Telemundo announce at its upfront presentation to the press yesterday that it will begin streaming its trademark breathless novelas on the web with English subtitles. Telemundo says they’ll start rolling the feature out in the summer, and complete it by fall. The network also announced a high-def broadband video player that represents a partnership with MSN. I was pleased to hear Telemundo announce at its upfront presentation to the press yesterday that it will begin streaming its trademark breathless novelas on the web with English subtitles. It’s always been difficult for me to get a real feel for Telemundo programming as I, like so many Americans, am woefully monolingual. Watching Spanish-language programming always reminds me of the time I ...... Read More

Yo Yo Chump Dupes Stations

Michael Malone

Milwaukee’s Journal-Sentinel has a fascinating story on a mystery man who talked his way onto the live programs of several Midwestern stations, claiming to be a yo yo championship but turning out to have no discernible talent (other than his ability to talk his way onto local television). Kenny Strasser–if that’s his real name, of course–talked his way onto at least fi ...... Read More

We took a look at the Wilkes Barre-Scranton DMA in our latest “Market Eye” installment. Of course, WNEP is still a huge winner in DMA No. 54, but there are a bunch of interesting subplots going on.  New Age Media’s MyNetworkTV outlet WQMY inked a deal with the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer to air their games-in high def, no less. WBRE began producing WOLF ...... Read More

This story elicits a big “wow!” every time I think about it. A Marine lieutenant returning home from war contacts WJLA Washington so they can film him surprising his wife upon his return. The wife happens to be a Washington Redskins cheerleader, reports the Washington Post, and the meeting was to take place during her practice session at FedEx Field. But WRC is the exclusive broadcas ...... Read More

WTVF Nashville became part of the story when massive flooding overtook Music City earlier this week. The station was forced to set up a temporary newsroom when its basement took on heavy water Sunday morning. “The newsroom is in the basement. Our entire bottom floor was flooded,” consumer reporter Jennifer Kraus said on WTVF’s NewsChannel5.com. “Initially it looked like ...... Read More
